Hernando County , was established on February 27, 1843 and named after the Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto who trekked through this area in 1539. In 1887 the Florida state legislature subdivided the larger Hernando County into the three existing counties of Hernando, Pasco and Citrus County. Hernando County is an active outdoor paradise with an average January temperature of 60 degrees. There is plenty to do including hunting, fishing, camping, paddling, birding, and hiking. Championship golf courses, paved or wilderness bicycle trails, and the Croom Motorcycle Recreation Area attract visitors from far beyond the County borders. |

Hernando County is part of what is called the Nature Coast, with large areas of land set aside as public preserves including the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge, Chinsegut Hill National Wildlife Refuge, Withlacoochee State Forest, Weeki Wachee Preserve, and the PK Ranch. There is plenty of water recreation also on the Withlacoochee River (one of the few rivers in the world that flows North) and the Weeki Wachee River and Weeki Wachee Spring as well as Silver Lake. |

There are many cultural events in Hernando, one of which is the Annual Brooksville Raid Festival sponsored by the The Hernando Historical Museum Assoc., Inc. The festival is a re-creation of a civil war battle that happened in Hernando County in July of l864. It is held on the 3rd weekend in January every year and has become the largest civil war reenactment in Florida with over 3200 re-enactors, 32 cannons and 80 horses. |
